Parent Involvement Matters!!

A Message From Your President:

Greetings fellow Colleton County Middle School Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) members,

Pursuant to the PTO meeting on October 10th, I am happy to announce that I was elected to serve as your President.  Like you, I have many other responsibilities, and like you, I consider my role as a parent one of the most important.  I am excited to have an opportunity to interact with each of you, the school officials, and teachers toward a goal that I’m sure we all share, to provide our children with a safe and rewarding education.

As parents, we play an important role in our children’s success in school.  However, many of us are not aware of the power we have to influence the success of our teachers as well.  Teachers have always been valuable commodities; however, recently their value is on the rise.  According to the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement, nearly 6,500 teachers did not return to their teaching positions for the 2016-17 school year in our great state of South Carolina.  While my occupation requires that I run into burning buildings and provide advanced life support to the critically injured and ill, I will likely never profess to be capable of taking one of those open positions.  It takes a very special person to be a teacher today.  By providing support and assistance to the teachers at Colleton County Middle School, we will improve the educational process for our children and for the future.

In our November meeting, we discussed the profits from our Chocolate sales fundraiser (currently $7,487.28) and the initiatives we would like to explore for the future, including the following:

1. A giving tree - a Christmas (and other holiday) tree on which teachers can hang "wish" items that parents can take off the tree and fill.

2. "My favorite things" - a list of teachers' favorite things so that parents/staff/community can treat teachers on a specified day (or any other time they want).

3. Benches for the recess area

4. Lock box / plastic shed for footballs/basketballs used at recess

Mrs. Greene (6th Grade Principal & CCMS PTO liaison) also discussed the Chromebooks, which will soon be distributed to students as well as the New Tech program.  She will provide a full briefing on the New Tech program at the January 11th PTO meeting.  Finally, Mrs. Greene discussed the newly implemented OLWEUS Bullying Prevention program.  I have attached the handouts that were distributed in the meeting.

Our PTO cannot move forward alone.  Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, December 14th at 5:30 PM in the mini-auditorium at Colleton County Middle School.  The success of our initiatives depends on your participation and the participation of others.  I ask that each of you not only make plans to attend our next meeting, but that each of you bring at least one other concerned parent that has not previously attended and would like to serve on the PTO.

Finally, I will effort to be available to each of you.  I have been in enough meetings to know that some of the best ideas often remain unheard due to time constraints or an inability to effectively communicate them during the meeting.  As a result, I have listed my contact information below and I ask that if any of you would like to communicate ideas, problems or especially solutions outside of our regular meetings, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to seeing all of you on December 14th.

Dr. David A. Greene
